The Baby on the Bus Goes Whah, Whah, Whah

Bus Chaos Travels Familiar Route

I don't have enough information to point fingers at individuals, nor should that be my responsibility as a member of the public.

However, as a member of the public, I can ask what is it about the system that creates such a dysfunctional program. Finally, the HCPS transportation issue has deteriorated to the point that it can no longer be glossed over and defended with the "isolated incident and broad brush attack" defense.

Eric Martin paid for the dysfunctional system with his life. All his mother wanted was the system to be fixed. All she got was $200,000. (read the article).

I want to thank the local media for finally airing the issues of dysfunction. Hopefully it will cause a change at our local level, which is what has the most direct influence on our kids, despite the smoke and mirror defense of outside causes such as lack of money.

Dear Mr. Hancock: Thank you for remembering our son Eric Martin who lost his life through the Hillsborough County School bus "system". I found your blog post today, as I am still attempting to make people aware. Nat'l School Bus Safety week starts this year on the 22nd. We will remember Eric during this week (he died on Oct. 28th, 1999) There is SO much that parents don't know about this story, and many did not want to hear it at the time. I could and should write a book on the political aspects that are astounding. At the time, the managing editor of the Tribune was the ex communications officer for the school district. The reporter was furious to be so heavily edited, while the St. Pete Times reporter won a National Award for her story on Eric. Did you know that the head of the school board got a $250,000 bonus for being the first in the state to implement the program (never mind how sloppily it was done that our son died as a result). He took an "early retirement" shortly after this was exposed.I could go on, and on..parents have no idea what the good drivers and children are dealing with.

Thank you again,

Kimberly Martin
