Simple equation, right?
Simply split hairs to define same, then solve for the root of the problem.
Behavior is as simple as that.
The root of the behavior is an attempt to split hairs, so to speak.
Too many people wrongly define the root, therefore never solve the problem.
The basic element of a behavior is to obtain or escape. Plants do it. Animals do it.
The lower the form of plant or animal life, the less difficult it is to correctly define the function of the behavior. The higher degree of dysfuntional communication, the more difficult it is to correctly define the function of the behavior
A functional behavioral assessment is to define the function of a behavior.
Does a kid kick off their shoes in an apparent "fit" because: they don't have the ability to say what they want to say through verbalization; they tried verbalization, but it didn't work; they saw someone else do it and are trying it out for themselves; the shoes have been hurting and now is as good as time as any to get rid of them; or because they know this is the best way to piss off the authority figure because the authority figure has let the kid know that the best way to piss off the authority figure is to kick off the shoes.
When it comes to adults, it is always fun to try to figure out what their motivation is. What are they trying to get, or what are they trying to escape?
Splitting hairs just to do so may be similar to kicking off shoes just to do so.
But there is still a function, whatever the hell it is.
